{"id":1085,"date":"2014-09-18T10:22:52","date_gmt":"2014-09-18T16:22:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/touchingheartsathome.wordpress.com\/?p=131"},"modified":"2014-09-18T10:22:52","modified_gmt":"2014-09-18T16:22:52","slug":"fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/touchinghearts.com\/capitaldistrict\/blog\/fall\/","title":{"rendered":"Fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"block block--freeform\">\n<div class=\"container\">Fall has arrived. \u00a0The word \u201cfall\u201d is on my mind and it conjures up all sorts of associations.\u00a0 For example, \u201cfall\u201d connects to \u201charvest\u201d in my brain.\u00a0 As a result I\u2019m imagining the cornucopia of my childhood filled with beautiful small pumpkins, gourds, nuts and colorful apples (I live in Minnesota).\u00a0 It symbolizes Thanksgiving and my thoughts come to life remembering the beautiful dinners that were abundant and sustaining on so many levels.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking of the <em>fall<\/em> harvest dinner gets me thinking about the study Brown University published online last week focused on Health Services Research. \u201cCan providing free meals to seniors in failing health prevent some of them from winding up in nursing homes?\u201d was their question. \u00a0The researchers found that with all things being equal, the amount of money a state spends on subsidized meals correlates with a reduction in the percentage of relatively healthy seniors in nursing homes.<\/p>\n<p>Now I\u2019m at my desk and I\u2019ve just read a report on transitional care for hospitals and discharge requirements.\u00a0 And the word <em>fall<\/em> comes to mind again. \u00a0This time I associate it with the statistics of injuries due to falling that occur with older adults.\u00a0 I\u2019ll mention just a few noted in a report titled <em>Falls Among Older Adults: An Overview <\/em>posted September of 2013 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One out of three older adults (those aged 65 or older) falls each year.<\/li>\n<li>Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries.<\/li>\n<li>In 2010, the direct medical costs of falls, adjusted for inflation, was $30 billion.<\/li>\n<li>Twenty to thirty percent of people who fall suffer moderate to severe injuries such as lacerations, hip fractures, or head traumas. These injuries can make it hard to get around or live independently, and increase the risk of early death.<\/li>\n<li>Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI).<\/li>\n<li>Most fractures among older adults are caused by falls. The most common are fractures of the spine, hip, forearm, leg, ankle, pelvis, upper arm, and hand.<\/li>\n<li>Many people who fall, even if they are not injured, develop a fear of falling.
