Touching Hearts in the Community – Connecting Across Ohio for an End to Cancer
Touching Hearts at Home Cincinnati got to take the care and connection we value on the road, by attending the opening ceremony of Pelotonia 2026 in Columbus, Ohio. Our Columbus neighbors are a little less than a two-hour drive north from homebase here in Cincinnati, and it was well worth the trip. Co-owner of Touching Hearts at Home Cincinnati, Scott Taylor, was able to join in on a day full of connecting with other local Ohio caregivers, health advocates, and volunteers. A cancer-free world is the only goal of Pelotonia and one they encourage others to believe in. A continued dedication to community and clinical research could one day get us there.
What is Pelotonia?
Since 2009, the Pelotonia foundation has been dedicated to raising money for innovative cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James (OSUCCC). Pelotonia was created as a community driven approach to help end cancer. Their premiere annual event is Ride Weekend, where more than 7,500 participants come together to cycle, crossing Central Ohio on a range of routes, the highest reaching 165 miles. Participants are riding for change, not just for the people of Ohio but for the world, and the best part—100% of every participant-raised dollar goes directly to innovative cancer research at the OSUCCC. At the opening ceremony for this year’s event, no matter where you looked, you knew you were near another person who was passionate about fighting for urgent, thorough, and well-funded cancer research in hopes of ending the disease. Everyone there, in one way or another, knew someone or had been impacted themselves by what cancer can do and what it can mean for a family. It is a hopeful feeling to be around so many people showing up for change.
Cancer in the Senior Community
According to the National Cancer Institution, people age 74-84 are the most likely demographic to be diagnosed with cancer, and advancing age is one of the most important risk factors for cancer overall and for many individual types. Being a senior care provider means remaining mindful of this and understanding that a cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming and devastating for families. Touching Hearts at Home Cincinnati aims to offer a balance of compassion and proactive, medically informed care in these situations—meaning a caregiver who has a confident knowledge of medication schedules, doctor appointments, food restrictions, mobility needs, and more. Part of caring for seniors with cancer in Cincinnati is understanding the impact of this disease globally and and taking any small chance to support the search for a cure.
A Lot of “C”s
So, what does a cancer research fundraising foundation in Columbus and a senior care service in Cincinnati have in common? Really, just a lot of important “C’s”: connection, community, compassion, and care. The importance of community is not lost on those who dedicate their time to caring and fighting for the health of others. Community teaches you how to be cared for; how to reach out when you need a hand and how to offer one to someone else in need. It’s how Pelotonia has raised more than $339,000,000 for cancer research over the past 15 years. Community is also how Touching Hearts at Home Cincinnati stays connected and informed about the seniors we serve.
