Four Things You Can Do to Ease Your Mom's Daily Routine
As she ages, you’ve noticed your mom struggling more than usual. Her floors don’t get vacuumed or mopped as often. She often forgets to take her medication. She’s ordering takeout more often. Maybe she’s having a hard time walking up and down the stairs. She may have fallen getting out of the shower.
One thing you can’t do is ignore her changing abilities. If she’s having a hard time with her daily routine, these four things can help make it easier for her.
Get a Whiteboard
Buy a whiteboard and write a permanent list of things your mom needs to do each day. She can use a dry erase pen to check off tasks as she completes them. It may help her get organized so that she never forgets to pay a bill or take her daily prescriptions.
Create a Schedule Where Others Stop by to Help Out
Talk to your siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Does anyone have the time to help your mom with certain daily chores? If your aunt spends time with your mom each week, she may have time to put in a load of laundry. If your sister stops by, she might be able to cook dinner before she goes.
Jot down how often people can stop by and what they feel they could do to help. With that list, you’ll have a good idea of the days your mom is alone and may benefit from elder care services. You can also fill in the days with gaps by stopping by to take your mom grocery shopping, run errands, or just get her outside for a walk.
Reorganize Her Home
Set your mom’s home up to provide one-level living as much as possible. If she has two or more levels and the stairs are problematic, try to move her bedroom to the main level. If there’s a den, you could convert that to a bedroom.
The main floor should have a kitchen, bathroom, sitting area, and bedroom. As long as she’s able to get in and out of her home from that floor, she’ll be set. If that’s not possible, a stairlift to safely get up and down the stairs is worth researching.
Schedule Elder Care Services
Elder care services help your mom with everything she struggles to do independently. Whatever she has left is for her to complete as she has time and energy.
For example, she may need someone to cook meals and remind her to take medications. Arrange those services. Laundry and housekeeping can be her daily chores if she’s capable.
