It\u2019s a fact, home is the safest place for all of us to be right now.\u00a0 \u00a0But there\u2019s this to consider\u2026social distancing, the smartest way to avoid contact with COVID-19 for ourselves and our communities, will impact those who already live with loneliness or feel the loss of social connection.<\/p>\n

Perceived loneliness and social isolation can lead to depression, poor sleep quality, accelerated cognitive decline, and\u2026if you\u2019re not a smoker, it\u2019s compared to smoking 15 cigarettes a day or having an alcohol use disorder.\u00a0\u00a0 It can be twice as harmful to physical and mental health as obesity (Perspectives on Psychological Science, Vol. 10, No. 2, 2015<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Communication is key to feeling connected.\u00a0 It\u2019s how we stay informed as well as feel supported, loved, and \u2026 not so isolated.\u00a0 Now is a time for teachable moments.\u00a0 \u00a0For many people who have not felt the need to know more about social networking or what it\u2019s like to use video chat, it\u2019s time to learn; we are never too old to learn!<\/p>\n
