There are many elderly people who are light sleepers. Your elderly loved one might be one of them. There could be many other reasons why your elderly loved one is sleeping a lot throughout the day, as well. If you and their home care providers are trying to help your elderly loved one sleep more at night, instead of the day, keep reading here for tips on how to do this.
There are many people who get bored easily. If your elderly loved one is getting bored late in the evening or at night, they may feel like watching television. However, this might be keeping them up way too late, which makes them excessively tired during the day. In addition, there are some elderly people who are bored during the day, so they decide to take a nap. If your elderly loved one is sleeping during the day for either of these reasons, you should help them find things to do to prevent boredom. This might include you or a home care provider spending more time with them.
Many elderly people are taking medications. With this being said, almost every type of medicine has side effects. One of the main side effects is sleep issues. Some of the medications will cause excessive daytime drowsiness. If your elderly loved one is taking medication that causes them to sleep a lot during the day, you or a home care provider should take them to their doctor to discuss medication changes. There may be a different medication that will cause fewer side effects.
Another reason why many elderly people will sleep a lot during the daytime is because they are feeling depressed. Some people who are depressed will sleep for 12 or more hours at a time. If this is the case for your elderly loved one, you may want to talk to them about seeing their doctor or a therapist. Making lifestyle changes might help your elderly loved one to fight and lessen their depression, as well. Another thing that might help ease some of your elderly loved one’s depression is spending more time around people they care about such as you and their home care providers.
There are many reasons why an elderly person might want or feel the need to sleep a lot during the day. There could be a medical reason that is causing your elderly loved one to sleep during the day. Your elderly loved one might sleep in the daytime because they are bored, taking certain medications, or due to other reasons, as well. If you can determine why your elderly loved one sleeps a lot in the daytime, you and their home care aides can help them to stop doing this, so they can sleep better at night.
