What Are the Main Complaints With Aging in Place?

Your dad lives alone and wants to stay in his home. He has a few health issues, but they aren’t too bad. You do want to have a plan in place in case anything changes with his health or mobility. Elder care services could assist in some of his needs.

If you ask older adults what they struggle with the most while aging in place, four things top the list. Use this list to build an elder care plan that provides everything your dad needs.

His Home’s Inadequate

Your dad doesn’t want to move, but his home isn’t safe anymore. It could be that the stairs to his front door are too steep for him to manage. He can’t safely walk down the basement stairs to his laundry room or up the stairs to his bedroom.

You need to look at his current layout and decide if he needs a wheelchair ramp for his front door. Would a stair lift help him get to his bedroom? Or, is it possible to move his bedroom to a spare room on the main floor? If he is going to move, his main floor needs to have a full bathroom for showering.

He’s Gullible

In 2021, the FBI reported 92,371 elderly people were victims of fraud, and the average financial loss was just over $18,000. Over 3,100 elderly people lost more than $100,000. If your dad is likely to answer the phone or doorbell and fall for a scam, you need to take preventative steps.

Start by setting up screeners on his phone. Block unknown or unlisted callers. If he has a Pixel phone, the system will answer the phone for him and screen the call. At that point, only legitimate calls pass through the AI and allow the phone to ring. You should look for systems that screen calls.

Install a doorbell camera at his doors. If someone comes to the door, you can use the two-way intercom through your phone to determine who they are and why they’re there.

Elder Care Aides Help Run His Errands

When driving skills diminish or your dad’s eyesight worsens to a point that his eye doctor tells him to stop driving, your dad will have a harder time running errands. Picking up groceries is hard when no one is around to drive him. He has to arrange rides to his medical appointments or to the pharmacy for prescription refills.

Look into transportation services to ensure he has rides when he needs them. His caregiver can accompany him to stores and businesses, helping him complete his errands without forgetting one along the way or getting too tired to complete his list.

He Feels Lonely or Isolated

There may come a day when your dad cannot drive. His friends have moved away, and his close family lives out of town, so it’s hard to visit daily.

Loneliness and isolation can occur if your dad’s social circle gets smaller as time passes. Make sure he has an elder care agency sending a caregiver for companionship. He’ll have a caregiver available to take him out shopping, accompany him on fun outings to parks and museums, and provide friendship at his house.

An elder care advisor is here to answer your questions and go over pricing. Make a call to get started.
