Even if your senior parent is eating regularly, they may be malnourished. Studies show that a huge number of seniors are malnourished. Seniors need to eat a healthy balanced diet that includes a lot of vegetables and lean protein in order to get the vitamins and minerals they need to be healthy. It can be a challenge to get seniors to eat enough food, and to eat the right foods. Sometimes seniors can’t cook healthy food because of medical conditions like arthritis. Other seniors may have lost their appetite because of side effects of medication. So family members need to work hard to make sure their mom or dad is getting the right nutrients. One thing that can help is 24-hour home care services.
With 24-hour home care there is always someone with your mom or dad. So they can have a snack or a meal whenever they are hungry. For some seniors a series of healthy snacks like grapes, cheese and crackers, and vegetables with dip is a more palatable way to eat. But that means they may want a snack at night. 24-hour home care is a great way to make sure that your senior parent’s needs are met around the clock.
A CSA box delivery program will help support local farmers and give your senior mom or dad access to delicious, fresh, seasonal vegetables. When you sign up for a CSA box a local farmer will drop off a box of vegetables straight from the farm on the scheduled you choose. A 24-hour home care provider can help your senior parent cook those veggies for delicious healthy meals. Eating seasonally will keep your mom or dad interested in meals.
Meal delivery kits can be confusing, because many of them still require assembling ingredients which can be tough for seniors. But there are meal delivery services that deliver microwave meals in individual portions that are delicious and nutritious. You can choose from gluten-free, vegetarian meals, and a range of other options. Your senior parent can have delicious meals delivered and all they have to do is microwave them.
If you want to jump start your senior parent’s interest in eating, try making a recipe book with them. Write down recipes from the past for the meals that they used to cook for you. Or create a book of recipes that they want to try. Then you or a care provider can cook those meals with your senior parent and work your way through the book.
To make eating vegetables and healthy food easier for your mom or dad learn to love the ready to go options at the grocery store or deli. Most stores have prepared food sections that have vegetables that are already washed and cut, assorted fruits that are already cut and portioned, dips and dressings, pre-made chicken and lean protein meats, and things like pasta salads. Keep those in the house so your senior parent always has a snack or a light meal ready to eat when they want one.
