Glaucoma is a collection of eye disorders that damage the optic nerve, which is essential for clear vision. Glaucoma tends to develop slowly, and many seniors are unaware of their condition until major vision loss occurs. Because of this, and since seniors are more vulnerable to this condition, it’s important to know what signs to look for, as early detection is best. Both loved ones and senior home care providers can help seniors understand the signs, but also what might cause glaucoma in the first place so they can better care for themselves.
The risk of developing glaucoma rises with age, which is why it is particularly important for seniors to know what to look for and where to get support.
There are a few main causes behind this.
Age-related Changes in Eye Structure: The eye’s drainage system, which helps keep the eye pressure stable, can become less efficient with age. This can result in fluid buildup and elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), which is a significant cause in the development of glaucoma.
Genetic Predisposition: If glaucoma runs in the senior’s family, they are more likely to be diagnosed with it.
Other Age-related Health Conditions: Diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, which are also more common among seniors, may contribute to an increased risk of glaucoma. Also, certain medications, particularly corticosteroids used to treat a variety of chronic conditions, may cause elevated IOP.
Reduced Blood Flow: As seniors age, blood flow to the optic nerve may diminish, making it weaker and more vulnerable to damage.
Glaucoma is frequently asymptomatic in its early stages, particularly in its most prevalent form, which is known as open-angle glaucoma. However, there are some signs that can alert seniors to the probability of its onset. Senior home care and loved ones can also watch out for these signs by listening closely to things seniors might say about their vision or by watching for changes in how they move around the home. Having this support system by their side is crucial, as early warning signs can be hard to catch.
Some of the signs include the following:
Glaucoma can be successfully handled if discovered early, allowing seniors to keep their vision and quality of life.
Here are some ways family members and senior home care can help:
Encourage Regular Eye Exams: Because glaucoma is difficult to detect, annual eye exams with a focus on IOP measurement and optic nerve health are essential for seniors.
Medication Management: Seniors frequently require daily eye drops to reduce eye pressure. Family members or senior home care can assist by ensuring that these medications are taken consistently.
Lifestyle changes: Seniors with advanced glaucoma may require house modifications to prevent accidents, such as improved lighting and the removal of tripping hazards.
Transportation Assistance: As vision deteriorates, driving can become unsafe. Help with transportation can allow seniors to keep their independence while remaining safe.
Emotional Support: Vision loss is upsetting, and seniors may require professional therapy to deal with the changes they’re faced with. Even if they don’t choose therapy, they will still need a strong support system by their side.
Glaucoma is treatable with early detection, support from senior home care and loved ones, along with careful, monitored care. Regular eye exams, medication management, and a supportive atmosphere can all help seniors maintain their eyesight and quality of life.
