You stop by Mom’s house on Saturday and everything seems fine. She says she’s doing well, the two of you have coffee, and she tells you not to worry. But before you leave, you notice several unopened envelopes on the counter. There isn’t much food in the refrigerator. A basket of laundry has been sitting in the hallway since your last visit.<\/span><\/p>\n

None of these things necessarily signals a serious problem. Together, however, small changes can tell you that everyday life is becoming more difficult. For adult children who don’t see a parent every day, weekend visits are a valuable opportunity to notice where <\/span>home care<\/b> might make daily routines easier without taking away a parent’s independence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Don’t Turn the Visit Into an Inspection<\/b><\/h3>\n

Your parent deserves to enjoy your company without feeling as though you’re evaluating how well they’re aging. You don’t need a clipboard or a round of questions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, pay attention naturally while you’re together. What’s different from the last few visits? Has something your parent always handled easily suddenly stopped getting done? Are you noticing the same concern repeatedly?<\/span><\/p>\n

Patterns are generally more useful than one unusual day.<\/span><\/p>\n

Take a Look Around the Kitchen<\/b><\/h3>\n

The kitchen can reveal quite a bit about how an older adult is managing independently.<\/span><\/p>\n

Open the refrigerator while you’re getting something to drink. Is there fresh food available? Are leftovers accumulating? Does your parent have foods that are easy to prepare and that they actually enjoy?<\/span><\/p>\n

Then notice what happens around mealtime. Someone who used to cook regularly may now say:<\/span><\/p>\n

“I’m not hungry.”
\n<\/span>“It’s too much trouble to cook for one.”
\n<\/span>“I’ll eat something later.”<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

One skipped lunch isn’t necessarily concerning. Regularly skipping meals or having difficulty shopping and preparing food deserves more attention.<\/span><\/p>\n
