Ways Companion Care at Home Helps Seniors to Avoid Falls
Fall prevention is a big part of what companion care at home does to help aging adults stay safe. They…
What does age in place mean? Aging in place is all about staying in the home and neighborhood that’s comfortable and familiar for as long as possible. With the right arrangements, your parents can age in place for the rest of their lives. It all comes down to their health and what arrangements you set up.
Health May Impact What’s Needed
Health can impact how well your parents are able to manage their home and activities. If your parent suffers a stroke, mobility is going to be impacted either temporarily or permanently. If that happens, things like stairlifts, showers that accommodate a wheelchair or shower seat, and wider halls and doorways are all important changes.
Even asthma can impact how well your parent can manage to age in place. Air filtration systems help lower allergens within the home. Proper house cleaning is also important. Elder care aides help with light housework like dusting, vacuuming, and mopping.
Difficulty With Meal Preparation
Your dad was the cook in the family, but he passed away. Your mom has been living off canned soup and pasta ever since. Both of those options can be high in sugar, salt, and fat.
Elder care aides can cook meals for your mom. The caregiver can help her plan a weekly menu packed with healthy meals she loves. They can go shopping together. The caregiver can carry the groceries in, put them away, and cook meals for your mom.
Loss of Transportation
Some older adults remain safe drivers for decades. Others have vision changes or health changes that impact the ability to safely drive. If your parent has to give up the car keys, the loss of transportation can be detrimental.
Make sure your parent knows that elder care services can cover transportation. Nothing has to change. Your mom or dad can still go out to see friends or attend a class, luncheon, or meeting at a local church, senior center, or community building.
Lack of Companionship
Your older parent may not have as many friends in town as there used to be. Companionship services are popular. Caregivers can help with household chores and transportation, but they can stop by as often as needed just to provide friendship.
With elder care service arranged to help with tasks your parents can’t do independently, they can safely age in place. Talk to them about the things they can’t do without help. Then, call our elder care agency to discuss rates and schedules.
