Caring for your parents poses unique challenges. When your parents have some type of dementia<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, it’s even more difficult. Keeping them focused for more than a few minutes can seem impossible. Elderly care aides can support you with their care of clients who have dementia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Art tends to be one area where older adults enjoy themselves. Keep your parents busy for an hour or so with these simple art projects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suncatchers <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Suncatchers are easy to make and only take three items. Purchase some round glass vase fillers or glass aquarium gravel in appealing colors. You also need to purchase transparent plastic sheets from a craft and hobby store and clear liquid glue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cut the plastic sheets into fun shapes. Once that’s done, set out paper plates with a variety of glass beads. Paint a coating of glue over the plastic and have your mom or dad affix the glass beads to the plastic. Let them dry thoroughly before hanging them in a sunny window. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paintings <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Let your parents paint with items that usually are not considered when painting. Get a pad of canvas paper and some non-toxic paints. Set out items like feathers, combs, flowers, and fly swatters. Next, put out non-toxic paints in easy-to-dip trays (paper plates work well). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have your parents try the different painting tools to come up with unique paintings. If this seems beyond your parents’ current abilities, paint-with-water books are another way to get your parents painting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cracker Decorations <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, people with Alzheimer’s put things in their mouths. If that sounds familiar, you may worry about your mom or dad having access to paints and glue. Here’s a simple craft project that removes any worry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purchase some crackers. Round crackers like Ritz work well. Spread a layer of vanilla or buttercream frosting over crackers and arrange them on a plate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, set out trays of small candies. miniature M&Ms, chocolate chips, and chocolate-covered sunflower seeds are all excellent choices for this craft project. Your mom and dad make decorated crackers but pushing the colorful candies into the frosting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
