{"id":1056,"date":"2011-07-12T15:14:22","date_gmt":"2011-07-12T21:14:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/touchingheartsathome.wordpress.com\/?p=50"},"modified":"2011-07-12T15:14:22","modified_gmt":"2011-07-12T21:14:22","slug":"taste-disorders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/touchinghearts.com\/northpinellas\/blog\/taste-disorders\/","title":{"rendered":"Taste Disorders"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"block block--freeform\">\n<div class=\"container\">As people age, we often times\u00a0hear complaints that their foods do not taste as good\u00a0or taste differently.\u00a0 There are many potential reasons or causes.\u00a0 The following\u00a0resource\u00a0recommends\u00a0obtaining a medical\u00a0evaluation to determine whether it is curable or\u00a0if\u00a0adjustments may be helpful.<br \/>\nIf\u00a0a person\u00a0loses some or all of\u00a0their sense of taste, there are things that you can do to assist with making\u00a0their food taste better (if they approve and it is within their dietary recommendations):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prepare foods with a variety of colors and textures.<\/li>\n<li>Use aromatic herbs and hot spices to add more flavor; however, avoid adding more sugar or salt to foods.<\/li>\n<li>Add small amounts of cheese, bacon bits, butter, olive oil, or toasted nuts on vegetables.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid combination dishes, such as casseroles, that can hide individual flavors and dilute taste.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Can taste disorders be treated?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Many types of taste disorders are curable. For those that are not, counseling is available to help people adjust to their problem.<\/p>\n<p>Diagnosis by an <a>otolaryngologist<\/a> is important to identify and treat the underlying cause of your disorder. If a certain medication is the cause, stopping or changing your medicine may help eliminate the problem. (Do not stop taking your medications unless directed by your doctor, however.) Some people, notably those with respiratory infections or allergies, regain their sense of taste when these conditions are resolved. Often, the correction of a general medical problem also can correct the loss of taste. Occasionally, a person may recover his or her sense of taste spontaneously. Proper oral hygiene is important to regaining and maintaining a well-functioning sense of taste.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Where can I find more information?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The NIDCD maintains a directory of organizations that can answer questions and provide printed or electronic information about hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech, and language.
