If you dislike puzzle games like crosswords, consider a computer game that requires brain power to solve the puzzles. Story-rich games like Sherlock Holmes have you investigating crime scenes to find clues, figuring out the answers to cryptic puzzles, exploring the history of an area, and talking to witnesses for more insight.
Another option is a game like The Witness where you’re alone on an island with electrical cables that open the doors to another section. You have to figure out how to power up the cables to open each electric door. This escape room game is difficult and takes some critical thinking skills to move from one area to the next.
Eat a balanced diet every day. Avoid foods that have added sugar, salt, and saturated fat. Home-cooked meals are best.
Try to establish a weekly menu that includes fiber-rich foods like whole grains and a lot of fresh produce. Try to eat foods in every color of the rainbow each day. Red tomatoes, yellow peppers, orange carrots, white eggplant, green Brussels sprouts, and blue/purple blueberries are all great choices.
Stick to lean proteins and get enough dairy for calcium and vitamin D. You can also get some vitamin D if you go outside in the sun.
A daily walk in nature goes a long way in helping maintain your brain’s health. Walks in nature ease stress, which is ideal. It boosts your mood, which helps lower the odds of conditions like anxiety and depression.
The other benefit to a daily walk is that it gives your body the exercise it needs to lower the risk of chronic health conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. If you’re not already walking each day, it’s time to start.
