Caring with Compassion: Raquel's Story

At Touching Hearts at Home of Fort Bend, we believe that home care is about more than just providing services—it’s about connection, trust, and showing up with heart. Raquel O’Guin, one of our dedicated caregivers, embodies this mission every day. In just six months with us, Raquel has made a lasting impression not only on her clients, but also on our entire team.

A Calling Reawakened

Raquel’s path to caregiving wasn’t linear, but it was deeply personal. After years in customer service and pursuing a medical degree she didn’t complete, life offered her a different kind of calling. When her mother’s health began to decline, Raquel became her primary caregiver. Through that journey of love, loss, and care, she found her purpose.

“Those moments we shared were so special and important. They reactivated my calling to care for those who are not capable of caring for themselves,” Raquel shared. “Fortunately, I was given the opportunity to pursue a career as a caregiver with Touching Hearts.”

Moments That Matter

Even in a short time, Raquel has created heartfelt bonds with the individuals she supports. One client, in particular, stands out—a woman who regularly reads the Bible and hosts a weekly prayer group. Their shared spiritual connection turned into a beautiful exchange of support.

“She has us read the Bible together every day, and I told her, ‘This is your ministry.’ It helps me as much as it helps her,” Raquel said. “Seeing her smile made me feel nothing but gratitude.”

It’s these quiet, powerful moments that define the impact caregivers have in their clients’ lives.

Lessons from the Heart

Raquel believes that caregiving begins with paying attention. “Not every senior is the same,” she explained. “But commitment to building a true relationship with every client always leads to a meaningful connection.”

One way she builds that trust is by listening—not just to words, but to facial expressions, tone, and body language. “Sometimes they don’t say what’s on their mind, but their expressions tell you everything you need to know.”

This emotional intelligence is one of Raquel’s strengths, helping her tune into the unspoken needs and comfort her clients in ways that go beyond routine tasks.

Navigating the Challenges

While caregiving is deeply rewarding, Raquel acknowledges the emotional challenges. “Getting attached is one of the hardest parts,” she admitted. “I wish I could do more and be more involved, but we have to learn to be flexible as circumstances change.”

Still, she sees the value in every interaction. A particularly moving example came from a client who is gradually experiencing memory loss. “He always asks how my little girl is doing. Even though he’s forgetting things, the fact that he remembers that I have a daughter means the world to me. It reminds me that I’m making a difference.”

Advice from Experience

For those considering a career in home care, Raquel offers this simple but powerful advice: “Care for them the way you would want others to care for your family. Simple as that.”

Her experience has also shifted her own perspective on aging. “Being a caregiver has taught me to be more patient, humble, and understanding. We will all go through the process of losing some of our independence. We need to appreciate the little things.”

The Power of Presence

Raquel’s story is a shining example of what caregiving can be when it’s grounded in love, respect, and presence. At Touching Hearts at Home of Fort Bend, we are proud to have caregivers like Raquel who show up every day not just to provide support, but to share in life’s sacred moments.

“Our loved ones need friends who are willing and capable to help,” Raquel said. “It’s not only a job—it’s an opportunity to fulfill our responsibility of taking care of our elderly.”
