The macula is part of the retina that helps with detailed vision. Over time, the macula may become damaged. This is known as age-related macular degeneration. Vision goes gradually, so an older adult may not realize they have it until vision loss occurs. Regular visits with the eye doctor are the best way to catch macular degeneration early and having home care services can help with any additional needs that might arise from this condition,
Your dad’s doctor said he has macular degeneration. The macula specific purpose is central vision and is the area of the eye that helps you see details like the eye of a needle you’re about to thread. Or, it enables you to see the hands on your watch to make it possible to tell the time.
Sit down and discuss these talking points to make sure he has the help he needs and how home care services can help.
There are two primary forms of age-related macular degeneration. The dry form is most common. It occurs when fat deposits (drusen) develop beneath the retina. This forces the macula to narrow and stop functioning correctly.
Wet age-related macula degeneration is the other type. It’s less common than the dry form. It occurs when blood vessels develop below the retina and leak blood and fluids, which damage the macula and cause scars. Vision goes away faster with the wet form.
Your dad needs to know what kind he has in order to discuss care plans. Treatments are essential to slowing the progression. For the dry form of macular degeneration, vitamin and mineral supplements are recommended. A diet rich in eye-healthy vegetables like kale and proteins like fatty fish is essential.
If your dad has the wet form, he may be given injectable medications to help stop the blood vessels from forming. These medications also help control the blood vessels from leaking. Laser surgery is another option.
If your dad’s vision is going, he’s going to need someone to drive him to his appointments and escort him on shopping trips. Home care services agencies offer transportation services. Instead of taking off hours from work, you can hire a caregiver to drive him around.
His vision may make it hard for him to do the housework correctly. He won’t be able to see dirt and grime. Home care services providers can help with housekeeping chores.
Another issue with vision loss involves cooking his meals. If he needs help reading a recipe, he has his caregiver there to help him. He may find he needs the home care services aide to prepare the meal for him. That’s another option.
As soon as you know your dad has macular degeneration, make sure your family is working on a care plan. The more support he has, the easier the transition will be for everyone. Call our home care services agency to get started.
