Managing Diabetes in Seniors Through Meal Planning and Physical Activity
Having home care by their side helps seniors better manage their diabetes in a number of ways, as discussed here,…
Although seniors should be moving as much as possible, there are times when it is just not possible. They may have had physical conditions that prohibit them from moving as much as they want or they may have chronic illnesses that do the same thing. There are still ways to move as much as possible in bed or while sitting that will keep them as healthy as possible, but they will still need extra help especially if they are immobile. Personal care at home aides can be a huge help for seniors who cannot move around their homes with ease but still wish to age in place.
One of the hardest things for immobile seniors to battle is grooming and hygiene. It can be hard to get up and get to the bathroom for a shower, but it can be just as hard to do a sponge bath. If your loved one needs help with either of these or even just dressing every day, this is something that personal care at home can help with. Your loved one may need to come up with a routine where they take a shower or bath once a week and the other days a caregiver can help them with a sponge bath. This will help ensure they stay clean, healthy, and limit the amount of germs that can be spread. It is not always the most comfortable position to be in when a senior feels like they can’t bathe themselves. However, you can assure them that personal care at home has the most experience and will help them with respect and professionalism. In this way, it can be easier for an adult to feel comfortable with them and allow them to feel more independent that other options.
When a senior is immobile there is a good chance they will be in their bed or on the couch or in a favorite chair for most of the day. This means the chairs, couches, and beds can become a breeding ground for germs. Caregivers need to change bed sheets weekly and sanitize the things the seniors use the most. This will help keep a senior comfortable and clean which is crucial for overall health while aging in place.
Although a senior can still move around while sitting, by lifting light weights, or doing leg raises, they are going to need to focus on nutrition. Food will be even more important to those who are immobile. They need to focus on eating low calorie but well-rounded, protein-filled foods every day. When they eat too much and they lack movement it can lead to obesity. Personal care at home can help your loved one eat well by preparing the right kind of meals for them.
Your loved one who is immobile may not have as many friends over. Personal care at home will not only help care for them but they will also be a friendly face to talk to. They provide a good way for a home-bound senior to socialize and can help them use the phone or facetime to talk to family and friends throughout the day.
