Embracing Eco-Living While Aging in Place
Aging in place and eco-living easily blend together to create a home environment that is perfect for seniors, with home care…
Earth Day is coming up on April 22. This holiday was first conceived in the 60s with the first official Earth occurring in 1970. It then went worldwide in 1990. Earth Day is a day to draw awareness to the importance of keeping our home planet in good health and able to support all of its inhabitants. If your loved one enjoys environmental causes, she might enjoy spending some time celebrating this special day. Here are some fun events your loved one can enjoy with you or she can have her senior home care provider join her.
When the snow melts in the spring, it can leave behind a lot of garbage that was buried in it over the winter. Earth Day is a great day to get out and help clean up some of the garbage that has gathered around the park. Some parks will organize a clean-up in honor of Earth Day, but even if your local park doesn’t, your loved one can grab a garbage page, a long pair of tongs to pick up the garbage, and some shoes for walking in the muck and help clean up her favorite park. If she needs transportation, a senior home care provider can help with getting her to and from the park safely (and even help with picking up garbage).
Another great way to celebrate Earth Day is to provide a safe resting place for local birds. If your loved one has a backyard or a balcony, she can put out birdfeeders and possibly a bird bath so the local birds will have a place to eat and drink when they migrate back to her area. Creating a bird-friendly yard will also provide your loved one with year-long entertainment as she watches her feathered friends come in for daily visits.
Recycling isn’t always as easy as throwing a plastic bottle into a bin for the recyclers in your area to pick up. Use Earth Day to do some research with your loved one about all the items that can be recycled and how they should be recycled. Once she has recycling knowledge, your loved one can make sure that whoever is visiting her home, whether it’s family, friends, or her senior home care team, knows how to recycle what they use while visiting.
Even if your loved one does not have room to plant a tree on her property, she can go online and find many places that will plant a tree in her name in a forest somewhere to help the Earth maintain its needed forests for good health.
A garden is a great place to celebrate all that the Earth can produce when a little time, effort, and love is taken to sow fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Whether it’s a small herb garden on her windowsill or a large rose garden in the yard, let your loved one celebrate her green thumb this Earth Day.
