Malnutrition is something that a lot of seniors struggle with. One of the most common reasons why seniors aren’t getting enough to eat is that they don’t want to cook a full meal for one person because they don’t want leftovers or won’t eat leftovers. Seniors who have arthritis or poor mobility also can find it difficult to shop for all the pantry essentials that are necessary to be able to cook full meals. But take out, delivery and pre-made meals can be healthy options for seniors who don’t want to cook or can’t cook. There are plenty of things that seniors can do to create healthy meals that can be delivered to them or picked up by their senior home care provider. Senior home care can really help seniors with things like getting out of the house to shop or pick up meals and it’s nice for seniors to have a senior home care provider to eat their meals with.
These days almost all supermarkets have a huge selection of prepared foods. Seniors can get delicious healthy sandwiches, salads, soups, vegetable trays and containers of pre-cut veggies with dip, and fresh fruit pre-cut and already portioned. These items are packed fresh and dated so your senior loved one can be sure they are fresh. And most are packaged without condiments or sauces so they are just the basic ingredients which are pretty healthy. Seniors can also pick up heartier meals like pot roast, pasta dishes, chicken salad, and more in smaller portions so that they won’t waste food.
A full rotisserie chicken is one of the best items that seniors can buy at the store. After eating some of the chicken with vegetables seniors can shred the rest and use it to make chicken salad. There are dozens of ways that seniors can all of the meat on the chicken. And when the meat is gone or has been portioned and prepped for later use the bones can be simmered in a slow cooker with water, herbs, spices, and vegetables to make a delicious healthy soup.
When seniors do order take out or delivery restaurant meals substituting healthy steamed vegetables for fries or onion rings will make the meal a lot healthier. Ordering a protein like a steak or a chicken breast with steamed vegetables and rice is a great way for seniors to get a healthy and delicious meal. They can ask the restaurant to divide the meal into two containers so that they can get two healthy dinners out of one meal as well.
It’s a smart idea for seniors who are ordering take out or delivery meals to stock up on some extra side salads and soups when they order. Then they have several meals worth of healthy lunch options like soup and salad as well as a main course.
