Are You Feeling Thrown into Caregiving?
Lots of caregivers gradually find themselves in that role, but plenty of caregivers literally wake up one day and need to suddenly take a much bigger role in taking care of someone they love.
Make Sure You Know as Much as Possible
You need to know as much as you can about what’s going on and why your senior is suddenly in the situation she’s in. If she’s experienced an unexpected downturn in her health, that can be scary for her and for everyone else involved. Sort through the data you have access to and figure out what you’re missing. It’s also a good time to make sure that you are in touch with what your senior needs and wants.
Make a List of Everybody Who Can Help
Just because your senior needs some serious help right now, that doesn’t mean that you are the only one who can do what needs to be done. There might be friends, other family members, and even other people in your senior’s life who are able to help out, even in small ways. You may need other help, too. Senior care providers have experience that you can lean on, especially if you’re really the only person your senior can rely on right now.
Enlist the Help of Everyone Who Is Available
Once you know who you can delegate to, make sure they’re on board. You might not have to share with them every detail of what your senior is going through, but just enough to help them to understand why you need some extra help. This becomes your own support system, which is a necessary part of being a caregiver.
Put Together a Plan
You’re going to need a plan, both now and for the future. If your senior’s situation is one that is likely to improve, your duties as a caregiver may lighten up in the future. Regardless, you need to be able to have some sort of plan, based on your senior’s needs and her wants. This is where having as much information as you can get is really going to pay off for you, because you’ll be able to put together a more accurate plan.
You may not know at first exactly what you’re in for with your new caregiving experience, but you’ll learn. Being as prepared as possible is going to help you to modify your plan when you need to and deal with everything else that crops up.
