The Power of Connections for Seniors Aging in Place
Aging in place provides seniors with the comfort, familiarity, and independence they seek, allowing them to remain in their own…
Last year, the pandemic had many families staying home and arranging safe, socially distant staycations. You’ve been vaccinated and want to get away this summer. As your parents’ family caregiver, you have to consider them. They’re not ready.
When you’re in this situation, do you give up and plan another staycation? Is there another option? If you’re considering another staycation, here are some ideas to make this year’s plans even better.
Come up with a list of restaurants you’ve never tried. There’s a new vegan restaurant in town, but you’ve never considered a vegan diet. You can have some vegan food without having to commit for the rest of your life. Try it out and see what you think.
The new Japanese restaurant is doing chef tastings each week. Book one of those slots and take a culinary adventure through Japanese cuisine.
Once you’ve tried a new cuisine or restaurant, find something else new to try. You’ve always thought about horseback riding. Book an hour-long trail ride for beginners and explore some of the local trails on horseback.
You’ve never been camping and wonder if you’d like it. Borrow someone’s tent and set it up in your yard. See if you like sleeping outside without having to be hours away at a campsite. It’s a good way to try it before you commit.
You’ve been to a local history museum many times as a child. You’ve never gone back because the exhibits haven’t changed. Go back to the museum as an adult and enjoy the fresh perspective. Bring your children or grandchild and experience the museum from their point of view.
During your staycation, pick up a new hobby. You’ve never painted before, but you’ve wondered if you can do it. Purchase a starter paint kit and make painting your new hobby.
You might have an old hobby that you haven’t had time for it. Dig out your supplies and get back into it.
Would you travel if you didn’t have your parents with you? They may not feel safe traveling yet, but you do. Maybe they can’t travel, so you feel obligated to avoid traveling and be there for them. There’s a better option.
Reach out to a senior care agency to learn more about respite care services. Your parents could have caregivers with them while you go on vacation. You get to take the break you want, and they don’t have to leave their home.
Respite care services are temporary while you’re away. They include everything from meal preparation to housekeeping. They have senior care services ensuring they have everything they need. That makes it easy for you to have a great time without worrying about them at home alone.
