Creating a Memory-friendly Home Environment for Alzheimer’s Patients
Seniors living with Alzheimer’s disease need a supportive and familiar home environment to maintain the highest quality of life. As…
From October to March in some areas, ice, snow, and rain make it hard to get outside. Being stuck inside for days can lead to cabin fever. It doesn’t matter if you’re old or young, cold weather can be hard to deal with. If you find your kids and your parents feeling bored and restless, here are some cold weather activities they’ll enjoy.
Make Bird Feeders
In the winter, birds struggle to find enough food. If your parents and children like to watch birds, you can build bird feeders out of old plastic bottles. Cut holes in the bottom where birds can access the food and create holes to stick dowels through for the birds to perch on. You’ll fill it with food using a funnel at the top of the bottle. Attach a piece of rope through the top to hang it from a tree or post.
Bake Bread
Homemade bread fills the house with incredible aromas. Kneading is a good exercise for arthritic hands, and children also enjoy pounding and flipping and working the dough until it is smooth and elastic. When the bread is baking, your parents could teach your kids how to keep shaking or whipping heavy cream until it turns into homemade butter.
Turn a Movie Afternoon Into a Fun Hidden Objects Game
Create a set of cards that list various items or activities. Put on a movie that your parents and kids will love. Deal the cards out evenly to everyone watching the movie. The object is to spot as many of the items or activities listed on the cards while watching the movie. The person to find the most by the end of the movie wins.
Learn an Old Game
Ask your parents to teach your kids an old card game. Games like Cribbage or Gin Rummy are good for building counting or matching skills. Some other old games your kids may not know are Dictionary, Spades, and War.
It’s important to get your parents outside as often as possible. With icy sidewalks and driveways, you’ll find it’s a little comforting to know they’re not alone. Senior care services do more than help your parents cook meals and clean the home. Caregivers can help your parents choose the right attire for being outside and join them on walks of the yard or neighborhood.
Rates depend on the services your parents require. Call a senior care agency to talk about the ways a senior care aide can help and what those services cost.
