Creating a Memory-friendly Home Environment for Alzheimer’s Patients
Seniors living with Alzheimer’s disease need a supportive and familiar home environment to maintain the highest quality of life. As…
Personal care tasks are those tasks that people engage in every day as a routine part of life. Activities like bathing, eating, dressing, and more are part of those personal care tasks. These are also tasks that might be incredibly difficult for someone who is recovering from illness, injury, or surgery. Having help from home care providers to handle these tasks allows a senior to focus on what they need to do in order to recover. Seniors who need help with personal care tasks may not need to have that help for as long as they fear.
There are beliefs around having help with personal care tasks that can make someone feel uncomfortable accessing this type of help. People might feel embarrassed, of course, but they might also feel as if this means that they’ll never be able to take care of these tasks on their own again. But personal care at home actually helps to preserve independence, making it easier for seniors to recover and handle these tasks on their own again as soon as possible.
When seniors are doing more than they should while recovering, that can cause them to experience more difficulty with that recovery. They may find that they’re not healing as quickly as they expected they would. By having that help from personal care providers, they’re able to have better control over their own recovery. They’re able to rest and to recover at their own pace, which is very important for seniors who are trying to age in place.
It’s definitely embarrassing for someone who has always been able-bodied to suddenly need help with the simplest of tasks, like bathing. But the important thing for seniors to know about personal care at home is that these caregivers take preserving someone’s dignity very seriously. They want to help, without taking over and without making someone feel bad about needing that help. All of this can help to make it easier to accept help and therefore to heal as well.
Personal care at home offers a wide range of support and assistance for seniors recovering from any type of injury or illness at home. Knowing that their needs are met while also having their emotional needs met is really important, and home care providers are able to do that for the people receiving care. All of this can help to make recovery at home a lot less difficult for seniors.
