National Senior Citizens Day Spotlight: A Man of Many Talents

As we continue celebrating National Senior Citizens Day, we’re excited to share the story of a very special client who has been with us since last November. From the moment he joined our Touching Hearts at Home family, he has made a lasting impression on our team with his creativity, passion, and appreciation for the world around him.

One of his favorite hobbies is whittling, a skill he has been honing for the past 15 years. Because it’s an activity he can enjoy from the comfort of home, it’s the perfect pastime no matter the season. Using a variety of carving tools, including a Dremel, he transforms simple blocks of basswood into beautifully detailed works of art. Basswood is his preferred material because it is lightweight and easy to carve.

His specialty is carving birds, and over the years he has created stunning mallards, orioles, cardinals, and blue jays. Each project requires patience and precision, often taking up to two months to complete. Once the carving is finished, he adds touches of color to highlight the feathers and bring each bird to life.

His fascination with birds extends beyond carving. He enjoys birdwatching and uses a local app developed by Cornell to identify and learn more about the many species he encounters.

Another hobby that keeps him engaged is flying his drone. He shared with us that drone operation requires you only need to register with the FAA assuming the drone is .55” or greater. Equipped with a compact drone and a powerful camera, he captures unique aerial views of local fields and grasslands, combining technology with his love of the outdoors.

Photography is another lifelong passion. Armed with his Canon camera and multiple lenses, he and his care partner often venture into local parks or along the river in search of wildlife. One of his favorite subjects is the majestic eagle, and he takes great pride in capturing these beautiful birds through his lens.

What truly stands out is his appreciation for nature and his enthusiasm for sharing his interests with others. Whether discussing the details of a recent carving, identifying birds, flying his drone, or photographing wildlife, his passion is contagious. Our caregivers always enjoy learning from him and participating in activities that bring him so much joy.

His story is a wonderful reminder that curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning can enrich our lives at any age. We are grateful to be part of his journey and honored to celebrate the talents that make him so special.

Stay tuned as we continue our National Senior Citizens Day celebration by highlighting more inspiring client stories throughout the week. 💙
